Volkswagen: Turn signal lamp replacement 2001 VW Golf, phillips head screws, flathead screwdriver

Question
I need to replace front drivers side turn signal lamp. When I removed the plastic housing cover and unclipped the plastic "door" at back end of the lamp there is little or no room to move the "door" all the way open as it is up against the battery. I then thought I might need to pull the whole headlight assembly forward. But after removing the two screws it didn't seem to move and I didn't want to force it. Can you tell me how to do what one would hope to be a simple task?

Answer
Honestly, I've never done one for that model, but here is a procedure I found at VW vortex:

Tools used: Phillips head screwdriver, flathead screwdriver (to pry)
Time Taken: 10 minutes max.
Difficulty: Not at all

First: Unscrew the two phillips head screws

Next you need to lift the outer plastic cover out, you'll notice 2 prongs going over the plastic piece right next to this one (just follow the crease on the left side of the plastic piece 2 inches to the left of the leftmost screw), you'll need to pull up on those firmly but gently to help the two pieces separate.

Now that that outer cover is out of the way, you can see the cover to the lights you need to work with. You need to push down on the tab, and pull the cover out from the light housing and pry the cover off (I used the flathead screwdriver for this, you need to do both at the same time).

Inside you'll find the wiring harness attached to the bulb's socket, pull the wiring harness out and move it to the side.

You now have access to the bulb socket. You need to turn the socket to the left (so with your hand down in there, counterclockwise), I used my left hand to do this because of the other stuff in the way, this should make it easier. Then you need to pull it out being careful not to break the bulb against anything.

Once you have the bulb out, you can easily pull it from the socket and replace.
