Volkswagen: ABS light 2002 Jetta TDI, little fuse, fuse panel

Question
The ABS light often comes on while I am idling.  I have had my local mechanic check the brakes and he sees nothing mechanically wrong.  Do you have any suggestions...what needs to be replaced?

Answer
The ABS has self-diagnostics and will store Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). To properly diagnose the problem, you will need a scan tool to access the DTCs or a mechanic who can.  If you get a code P1602, on some models you may be able to simply check the little fuse box on top of the battery. All the fuses for the ABS system are on that fuse panel on top of the battery.  Also there is a connector on the right hand side of that fuse box(again on top of the battery) that sometimes comes loose, especially if the battery was replaced recently.
