Volkswagen: Engine Check stays on after start up?, general warning, cake pan

My eyes rolling like marbles in a cake pan with full of negativity think it's going to blow up soon. What is this light representing may I ask your expertise and what can I do to fix it? Jetta 1999 4 drs sedan 4cylinders.

The Engine Check light is a general warning that the computer has detected a problem.  Unfortunately the only alternatives are to take it to a mechanic who has the capability to connect to the OBD test connector, download the error code and interpret the indication, buy an OBD tester to do it yourself (you'll need a computer also), or just live with the light.
