Volkswagen: 1969 VW Beetle with Auto Transmsiion, vw bug, automatic transmission

I own a 69 VW Bug that has an automatic transmission. The cover with the gear tree is gone so I don't know what gear its in when driving. Can't get it to drive more than 40mph and I can't get it to shift into any other gears. It is running fine other than that.

Hi Shelly,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

The gear shifter should move!  If you can't slide it down with the car off, you may have a bad transmission.  

To locate the drive gear - when you are going 40MPH you should be able to pull the lever down diagnally to drive '2'.
