Volkswagen: Battery installation, magnetic pickup tool, radio code

Question
How do i replace the battery in my 2000 beetle?

Answer
That's a good question.  It looks like the engineers found the very last few cubic inches in the engine bay to mount the battery.  Getting it out is a bit of a puzzle.  You need to remove the screws holding the power steering reservoir so that you can move it out of the way.  Then remove the screws holding the battery shroud and the screw clamping the front lip of the battery at bottom.  I'd recommend having a magnetic pickup tool handy.  Once these are out, you should be able to jockey the battery out.  If you don't want to reload your radio code or re-adapt the throttle, attach a "data saver" to the battery leads before unhooking them.
