Volkswagen: VW Passat turn signal sound, needle nose pliers, vw passat

Hi, I have a 2001 VW Passat 1.8T.  It likes to at random make the clicking sound that usually accompanies the turn signal (blink blink).  I haven't been able to correlate the making of the sound with anything.  It just does it randomly while driving or while in park.  Any ideas?

It sounds like the hazard relay is going.  It's part of the hazard switch.  You can remove and replace it by prying the lens off with a screwdriver and pulling it out with needle nose pliers.  Unplug the connector, plug the new one in and push it back into the dash.
