Volkswagen: 2002 Jetta Radio problems, hanging file folder, aftermarket radio

Question
QUESTION: My radio turns on, but has no sound (the volume indicator does display
minimum to maximum levels), the tuner dial does not work, nor does the
preset channel buttons, the am/fm buttons also are frozen.

The radio is not locked or in SAFE mode.

I also have already removed the fuse (#42) and replaced, all it did was reset to
FM1.

Its seems as the sound is "muted", because there is no hissing coming from
the speakers either.

the control panels and dial are all frozen, accept for the previously mentioned
volume indicator.

Any advice?

QUESTION: I do not believe so.

Answer

If it is a Monsoon, it may, and that might be the problem.  If not, it doesn't sound good for the radio.

There is a small chance that one of the connectors came loose.  Pull the radio out and look.  You can get removal tools at Circuit City or Best Buy, or make them from the metal bar from an old hanging file folder.

Be aware that if you replace it with an aftermarket radio, it will affect the K line of the diagnostics and some repair shops may refuse to do any diagnostics on it.  You may also fail emissions tests.  You can find cheap used replacements on ebay.  There are two versions, Monsoon and the other.  You can tell the difference by the four buttons around the volume.  On the Monsoon, one says MID.  Make sure the seller has the unlock code or you'll need to get it from a dealer.  Don't let the dealer charge you for the code.  They are supposed to give it for free per the manual.
