Volkswagen: 1979 Beetle Conv Oil Leak & Splattering, oil leaks, leak seal

As you suggested I finally cleaned by engine and compartment of all oil residue in an attempt to spot the source of the leak.  What I found after a few miles was oil gathering on the "shelf" by the dip stick.  I think what happens is the oil leaks from there on to the belts and then splatters everywhere.  So what could be causing this leak?  Seal around the dip stick?  Something internal causing the oil to back up the dip stick?  Other problem?  What do you think I should do next?  Should I be searching further?  How should I guide my mechanic?

Hi Peter,

It is probably coming from the plastic oil filler neck.  Make sure that it is tightened securely to the engine, and that the gasket looks ok.  Further, there is a large hose connected to it (in the rear behind the cap).  Make sure this is secure as well.

Check this, and let me know how you make out.  More likely than not, this is the source!
