Volkswagen: 96Passat TDI ( 97k miles), clutch master cylinder, clutch slave cylinder

Question
The clutch pedal would occasionally stick on the floor when starting off and the clutch will stay engaged. The clutch pedal seems to work properly when the engine is not running.White plastic clip on end of clutch master cylinder rod and its bracket on pedal and overlock spring look okay. There are no fluid leaks.(I replaced the clutch slave cylinder because no fluid or air would come out when bleeding.Checked for incoming fluid by loosening the fluid line at the slave and having a friend push clutch pedal down.)Now the clutch pedal sticks about half way sometimes rather than returning to its normal position. How do I determine whether the clutch master cylinder or something inside the clutch such as release bearing, etc. is causing this problem.? Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer
hello billy.  first I would recomment pulling the slave off the car and gravity bleeding a small bottle of brake fluid through the clutch slave.  (that said, does your model have a clutch master or does it feed from the brake master?  After doing so, reinstall the slave but make sure the push rod on the slave is seated properly.  Brake the bleeder on the slave loose and gravity bleed for a couple of minutes, then bleed again.  (do you know how to bleed a system of this nature?)  I must ask because I get 20 questions again from many different backgrounds.  It sounds like you have air trapped in this system.
