Volkswagen: starting system 98 Jetta GT 2.0 manual trans, wiring schematics, clutch pedal

Question
QUESTION: Car won't start with key. Will start and run by jumping +12v to solenoid from battery. no volts to solenoid using key. Replaced ig. switch, same condition. could it be the clutch switch? Where is it located? I found a switch on the clutch pedal arm, but it has a vacuum line hooked up to it, with a small two wire conn.?? Can you offer a suggestion?  I'm runnin out of gas.....!

ANSWER: Honestly i would need to look at wiring schematics to tell you and I do not have the bentley manual at home to say for sure.  When you say you replaced the ignition switch... you removed the steering wheel, drilled the switch and installed a new electrical switch for the ignition?  I ask because few people have the proper puller for removing the lock?

QUESTION: Yes,drilled the switch and pulled the hub correctly. Further t/s revealed low voltage to clutch switch (1v).
Relay is OK,not getting enough voltage to activate relay coil. Jumpered 12v to clutch switch and car started and ran.  Car has alarm systym...anti-theft. Maybe the alarm system is blocking the voltage. alarm system seems to be working, it can be turned on/off and activated  and sounds off when set off by trying to stat the car, then deactivated by turning the door lock with the key. The info I have says that if the anti-theft is activated you can not start the car at all.  But there is no info on how to reset the anti-theft characteristic.
ANSWER: hello david.  I have pondered this one a bit and hope you have already fixed it.  Have you?  Let me know.  My internet is back up..
thanks,
shad

QUESTION: No luck yet. I believe it is in the anti-theft mechanism because the car started when the clutch switch was jumpered. With the new ign. switch and being able to start and run via the jumper, the circuit btween the ign. switch and the clutch switch must be routed through a anti theft device, which appears to be locking out the start voltage signal. It looks like we'll have to let the dealer stick it to us...... David
ANSWER: No dave...don't do that just yet.  Do me  a favor, and I can't tell you how the best way to do this is... I normally pull the speedo out and the headlight switch...cause it takes about 10 minutes to do that.  Basically straight behind the headlight switch is the "module" for the alarm.  Actually there are two modules mounted there usually.  If you get that far.. let me know, honestly, I'm gonna have you jumper two wires and and I'll bet your car starts.  I don't know why I didn't think about this before.

QUESTION: OK...I'm ready to try jumping those wires you talked about!
Please let me know which ones....Thanks David
ANSWER: Ok, not sure if you are at work or what, so i'll try and monitor email today pretty close.  If you have the module unplugged,(there are two modules, one for cruise control and one for the anti-theft), but the two wires you are jumping out are red if memory serves me correctly.  These will be the largest wires in the group.  Let me know what you find and we'll get you through this.

QUESTION: Shad, tryed to contact you earlier, but you were not availale then. I unpluged the module behind the headlight switch with the two heaviest red wires (one red and one red w/blk strip) similar to ign print.  Checked for voltageon both wires (ign. in start position) no voltage,
jumpered at connector, NO start.? ?  David

Answer
hrmm, honestly I haven't checked for voltage but ... let me go grab my manual... if you are still up you can call me if you would like.  Otherwise I will be avail tomorrow after 5:00pm.  FWIW, I'm in south carolina and it is midnight my time.  (in case you are on the west coast?)
later,
