Volkswagen: VW Thing--old gas, million questions, vw parts

Hi Ron:

I have inherited a relative's 1973 Thing.  He left it outside, in a generally warm client, but there is gas in the tank.  It hasn't been started, by my estimate since 1994 or so.  My thinking is to remove the tank, empty it, and have the tank checked out in regards to it's condition.  WHile I probably have a million questions, I need advice on the old gas in the tank.

You can probably buy a new one less expensive than all the work to clean, treat, etc., the old one.
