Volkswagen: Mileage to be expected in vans and buses, vanagon, driving conditions

Would like to know what mileage to expect in a Vanagon or VW Bus in 1969 through 1972 models. Thinking of buying through Auto Trader and want to know as I live in a remote location in California.

Hi Judy,

That is a tough question to answer.  The transmission is generally very sturdy and can go on for nearly 200K miles with no problem.

The engine, however, is another story.  On a typical 1969-72 Type II, the bus is actually underpowered by the little beetle engine that propels it.

If it has not been beat on, and you drive nicely along at 60 MPH, a newly rebuilt engine can go close to 80K.   The engine life varies on driving conditions. Particularly hills.

The great thing though, is that rebuilt engines are readily available and can be bought for under 2,000.
