Volkswagen: throttle body on a 77 westy, vacuum hoses, rubber bellows

Question

hi i have a 1977 westy bus. i took it into a shop for a seal kit and some other work and when it was returned it had little to no power on the highway. i had a compression test done and it was good. i think the problem is i need a new throttle body because it idols so high you cant set the timing and as soon as you go over 60 it craps out. is there some place on the web i can buy a new throttle body, or is this possibly not the problem??

Answer
This doesn't sound like a bad throttle body.  It sounds like you have a leak in one of the many vacuum hoses or where the throttle body itself mounts to the engine.  The throttle body does not have too much to go wrong with it.

You should be able to turn the idle adjustment screw down on the throttle body so the engine will slow down in speed.

Most likely it's a vacuum leak, check each hose and the rubber bellows that connects to the throttle body.  These things usually leak as well and are known to create this high idle condition.

Take your time, and let me know how you make out.

Thanks,
