Volkswagen: Electrical Death, electric failure, loose connections

Question
After finally getting my 68 on the road, and having a rough ride (it rides like a truck!) I unexpectedly and all at once lost everything, headlights, fuel pump, everything. And now with key on, I have no power. I can't find any loose connections, my battery is fully charged and properly grounded. The wiring harness is shoddy at best but I can't track down what has downed the entire circuit. Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Kevin,

If you are sure that the terminals to the battery are properly cleaned and grounded, the next culprit that would initiate a full electric failure is where the battery + wire connects to the starter.

Disconnect the battery, remove the wires to the starter, and clean the terminals on the solenoid as well as on the wires.

Make sure that the wires themselves are not frayed, cracked, or broken all together.

This should get you back in action.

If you should still have any problems, do not hesitate to contact me.

Please let me know how you make out.
