Volkswagen: VW 2001 Jetta Turbo Possible Clutch Issue, clutch disc, emergency brake

Question
My fiance has been complaining that she gets less and less power when upshifting and trying to accelerate.  A VW mechanic told her it is probably the clutch and will cost between $1200 and $1600 to replace.  Does this sound like an accurate assessment and a reasonable cost for replacement.  Thanks for any help you can offer.

Answer
Andrew,

Try this quick test.

1) Put the emergency brake on as hard as possible.

2) Put the VW in second gear and give it a lot of gas.  Go as if you are getting ready to take off.

3) The engine should stall, if it still runs 'in place' the clutch is indeed shot and needs to be replaced.

$1,200 is a resonable place to replace the clutch.

If this is the case, make sure they replace:

The clutch disc and pressure place.

Also, have the flywheel resurfaced, if necessary.

Take Care,
