Volkswagen: what can I expect?, rivera bus, clutch disc

Question
Hi

Ok I have a 1978 Rivera bus I found siting in some hippy's back alley.

I whant to restore it.
I have a my space blog about the bus:

http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=21292128&blogID=...

Basically I know the clutch is sliping (ther is a lot of oil under the engine), the ignition wiring at the steering column is sketchy, It starts but wont stay running.

I want to go camping in this bus and need it to roll! At the least to the beach but I would like Yosemite!

I have restored my bug and understand the cost and time associated with body work paint and interior.

I have no idea about mechanical work on a 78 bus
so who can I go to in the LA aria and what can I expect it to coast for just the mechanical, I can do the other stuff. I'm thinking trans comes out and engine rebuild is the worst case $$$.

Answer
The best thing you can do to check the situation out:

1) Do a compression test,  make sure that the compression is around 70-100 PSI, with no swings between cylinders greater than 25 PSI.

2) If that checks out ok,  pull the engine.   It is not a hard process.  If the leak is between the engine and transmission, perform the following:

a) Check the end-play.  The tool can be obtained for about $15.00 on the link provided below.

b) Replace the rear seal, again this about $15.00 and is easy to replace.

c) Check out the condition of the clutch disc and see what you need to replace.  If the pressure plate is scored and the flywheel needs to be resurfaced -- get it done.

d) As for the engine stalling, this is most likely maintenance.  I would attack this part first, providing you have good compression, than address the other once the motor is back in.

Good Luck,

Ron
