Volkswagen: fuel pump Info, fuel pump relay, jumper wire

Question
Is there any way to find out what the fuel pump PSI is for a 1988 Jetta GL 1.8

Answer
Hi Rick,

Here is how you check it out:

Remove the fuel pump relay, and install a jumper wire with an on/off switch placed into the wire. Hook a pressure gauge to the fuel line where it enters the engine compartment. Turn on the pump with the switch and and read the pressure.

The correct pressure should be about 35 PSI with the small hose to fuel pressure regulator on. With the hose disconnected, it should read about 45 PSI.

It is a fairly straight-forward process, and no ripping apart of hoses and wires are required.   The only thing you may need to purchase is a pressure tester.

(I believe this car has two fuel pumps as well).

One is located in the fuel tank,  and the other one is located towards the front of the tank (on the outside).

I hope this helps, let me know how you make out.

Ron

P.S.  When working with fuel and electric -- ALWAYS have a fire-extinguisher on hand in case of emergency.
