Volkswagen: 2000 Jetta Thermostat, coolant level, jetta 2

Question
I have a 2000 Jetta 2.0 4 cyl. and the engine temperature, coolant
level warning light starts flashing and temp
guage goes up to 260 degrees.
The car isn't over heating and the coolant level is o.k. also no
leaking.

Is it a faulty thermostat or something else?

Answer
Hi Cameron,

1) When the engine temperature exceeds 260, check to see if the fans up front are on and running.

2) If they do not work, check and see if they kick on when you activate the air conditioning.

The fans should be working in both instances.

3) If the fans are working ok, most turn on the heat on full, does the temperature gauge go down a little?

After checking all of the above, and eliminating the fans as a problem, the next logical cause would be the thermostat.

Let me know how you make out.
