I recently lost the only key to my 99 jetta, I ordered another one from VW dealer and it worked for about three days. this morning i go to my car to unlock the door with the keyless remot but it doesn't work, lights dont flash, nothing happens.  so I open the car with the key and the alarm sound, and usually i can put the key in the ignition and start the car and the alarm will turn off, but the car won't start.  the radio works and all lights work, the car locks and unlocks work from the inside and with the key.  The key dosnt start the car the the remote doesn't work.  Help please.

Hi Addie,  See if you can find the valet key,  or have one made.  Than follow these steps:

1) Sit in the car with the engine off and your driver side window rolled down. (so you have access to the outside lock)

2) Insert the new key into the ignition.

3) Insert the little valet key in the driver side door lock (outside the car)

4) Turn the valet key like you are locking the car, but hold it there.

5) While holding the outside key in lock, press the unlock button on your new remote for 2-3 seconds.

6) Let go of the button.

7) Press the unlock button again for 2-3 seconds. Now the code should register.

8) Let go and you should hear an acknowledgement beep. (the alarm honk/beep)

Good Luck, and please let me know how this works out.

Hi Addie,

Please find your questions, and my replies to them below:

Q. Do I have to have another key made? If so, do I need to have my car towed in or can they make a valet key from the one I have now?

A.  If you only have the one key, it's best to bring the key to the dealer to program it for you.   I called a VW Dealership for you today in the greater NY area.   They said the cost to properly program the key is approximately $40.00, maybe less.

Q. Also, is it possible that there is something else wrong, like battery in remote is dead? Thankyou for your speedy reply!

A. That would certainly be indicative of a battery problem, Addie, but if the key is new, you shouldn't have that kind of trouble.

Either way, it's worth going to the Dealer, as they can fix it for you, fairly quick and with little head-ache.

Please let me know how you make out!
