Volkswagen: 72 beetle emergency brake, penetrating oil, emergency brake

Question
I have a 1972 Volkswagen super beetle.  I released the emergency brake, but the rear driver's side wheel is still stuck.  This happened once before about 8 months ago and I broke it loose by driving through it.  The car is currently parked head first in a space.  I could call some friends and turn it around, but I would much prefer either something easier or something permanent.  Any help you could offer would be great!  Thanks,
Mark

Answer
This is very common in VW's that have been sitting for a long time.  The best thing to do is to take the wheel off, and carefully bang a piece of wood all around the front of the drum, as well as the rear of the drum. (be careful not to hit anything like hoses or lines.   Plus, don't bang on the rear plate too too hard.

Look for any exposed areas of the cable (not near the drum) and put some penetrating oil on any exposed areas.   Usually the hit with the hammer (it may take about 15 minutes) and wood will create a "click" noise, and you know it's free. (make sure the brake in the car is down.)

If it is still seized, put the tire back on, and go forward and backward three times quickly with the car.  It will want to dip down in the area of the locked brake,  but that's ok,  just be prepared when it breaks free.

Let me know how you make out.
