Volkswagen: Keyless Entry Remote for 1998 VW Jetta, thin metal plates, vw jetta

Question
Ron,

I have a Keyless Entry remote control for a 1998 VW Jetta that
does not work. Before I bring the car into a repair shop to see if
the sensing system is at fault, I wanted to replace the
batteries in the remote and give that a try. I'm not certain the
type, number and arrangement of batteries in the remote was
correct to begin with, so could you advise how many I should be
replacing, what type of battery to use, how they're arranged in
the remote, and what I should do with the thin metal plates
(there are 2 of them) that were inserted in the same space as the
batteries?

Thanks,

Jon

Answer
Hi Jon,

The best solution for the problem is to have your batteries replaced at the dealership.   It is usually very inexpensive.  Although that is the problem 90% of the time, it is a good maintenance item, since your car is a 98.

Bring in it disassembled, it will be fine.

Take Care,

Ron
