Volkswagen: time belt on ´91 VW Passat, crankshaft pulley, vw passat

Question
I would like to install a new time belt on my 1991 passat, however I don´t know what cylinder i must have all the way up to install it and to have it on time. can you advice me on this.thanks

Answer
cylinder 1 (cam belt end) needs to be at top dead center. there will be a timing mark (little groove) in the crankshaft pulley that should roughly line up with an arrow on the lower timing belt cover. once the covers are removed mark all pulley positions with touch up paint or similar. also make sure the cam belt tensioner has no play or notchy feeling. if so, replace it.
