Volkswagen: 1999 Passat turn signal replacement, problem occured, spring hooks

Question
-------------------------
John,
It is the actual turn signal housing on the front of the car below the hood.  It fits in beside the headlight on the driver's side.  The entire housing blew off taking the bulb as well but the electical recepticle that hooks into the housing assembly seems to be OK.  Hope that answers your question.  Thanks

John,
My wife was driving down the road a while back when for no apparent reason the entire driver's side turn signal housing just blew off and shattered into a million pieces.  The electrical socket appears to be OK.  I bought a replacement assembly on eBay but can't figure out how it goes in.  There was a small piece with a spring on it and a black rubber/plastic circular ending through which one of the spring hooks attaches.  There is a hook at the other end of the spring.  I'm not sure where this hooks.  I see a small hole on the turn signal piece that I assume one end goes into but not sure where the end with the circular plastic piece connects.  I just arbitrarily tried to hook it in a couple places and it would fall off.  The assembly will not stay in place through just sliding it in to the upper and lower slots near the grille and I assume the tension of the spring mechanism keeps this in place.  This spring must have released when the original problem occured and explains why it was so easy to happen.  Sorry for the long and maybe not to clear description of my problem.  Can you help me figure out how to connect?  I thought about taking out the passenger side signal housing to see how it is hooked in but was afraid of screwing that one up as well.  Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks/Rick Davis  PS: If you know of any site on the internet that illustrates this repair that would be extremely helpful to actually see the instructions as well.

by turn signal, do you mean the indicator switch or the hazard switch? did you get a complete one with terminals etc?

Answer
the bulb holder fits into the housing in one position only. then turns clockwise to lock. then the light unit slides into some guides on the side of the headlight, until it is flush with the headlight and the wing. then from under the bonnet, there should be a retaining spring which hooks onto a plastic piece by the back side of the headlight. then it should be secure and safe.
