Volkswagen: 2001 beetle brake pad indicator, rear brakes, brake pad

Question
I have been noticing an indicator light on my dash...I looked it up and it is the brake pad icon. It is a circle with what appears to be pads on each side. The books says that I should inspect the front brake pads. I had this done and was told that the pads were like new and did NOT need replacement. I have checked the brake fluid and the rear brakes. All are fine. I know the sensor that is wired to this light is in the front brake pads. Is there anything else that could be making this light come on? It doesn't stay on constantly, it comes on randomly.

Answer
if the light is an amber colour then it is likely to be a faulty connector on the pads ( the sensor comes on when there are a few thousand miles left ). if the light is red, then it is indicating low brake fluid level, or a fault on that side of the it.
