Volkswagen: Volkswagen battery, dune buggy, 12 volt

Hi!  I own a 1962 Dune Buggy.  I bought it without knowing a whole lot about it (or cars in general for that matter).  The battery got stolen and I don't know what battery to buy as a replacement.  I have been alerted to a potential "conversion" from 6 volt to 12 volt but don't know how to tell what is required.  Is there an easy way to tell if I need a 6 or 12 volt???  What happens if a 6 volt is required and I put a 12 volt in it???  Or vice-versa??  Thanks in advance for your assistance!  Rene':)

Hi Rene',

Can you tell me what the two letters and numbers say on the front of the engine (under the dynamo).

Also, if you can locate the starter motor -- look around and see if you can find "Bosch 6V" or "Bosch 12V".

Once we find out the correct voltage, I can help you get it running the way you would like.
