Volkswagen: 95 Jetta idle and running problem, distributer cap, rotor arm

Question
John, no it doesn't.  If the car does start up if I'm just sitting in gear or switching into another gear, the car will stall.

John, thanks for reading this and taking the time.

I bought my '95 Jetta about a year ago from an mechanic that buys Jettas at auctions and fixes them up.  He did a full tune-up on the car before I bought it and for the past year the car has been running great.  Two weeks ago I drove a two hour car ride back to my house and that evening while pulling out of a driveway my car wouldn't go and rolled to a stop in the middle of the street.  When I tried to start it up again it wouldn't turn over.  I rolled the car to the side of the road and eventually rolled it to a parking space.

I got the car towed to a VW mechanic near my town and he said that it needed a new engine coil and a tune-up.  I got the car back to my house and installed a new engine coil but my car wouldn't start.  I put the old coil back in and cleaned all of the connections related to the coil (including the ground).  The car started right up and was driving fine.  I let it sit for an hour or so and when I got back in the car to drive it (that same day), it started but ran extremely rough and eventually stalled.  When I tried to start it again it wouldn't start.

At some points when this problem was happening, the car ran fine in higher gears (3rd and up) but when I slowed to 2nd or 1st gear the car would run roughly and eventually stall.

Any advice?  I'm looking to try and figure out what might be going on.

Thanks for your time,

Jen

does the car start if you apply a little gas when attempting to start?

Answer
a few idea's are possibly dirt in the throttle valve, possibly a temerature sensor fault. do you know if the distributer cap and rotor arm are in good condition? also, would it be possible to have the car "code read" by a specialist? as this would give a clearer indication to the problem.
