Volkswagen: 96 Jetta, less power & doesnt like rain, jetta gls, community message board

Question
The engine is petrol and is a 4 cylinder, 2.0 liter, automatic transmission.

After looking at the community message board and doing a little research on my own, I think the stalling in the rain problem could be the ignition control unit and/or the ignition wire.  I did the water spray test on the engine and when I reached that area, I could see sparks; then then engine stalled out and would not start for 10-15 minutes.  Is this something I can change on my own?  I am fairly handy, but do not work much on cars on my own.  It seems simple enough to change out.

Could this also be the cause of the engine's sluggishness when it's not raining?

Thanks very much for your assistance!

My '96 Jetta GLS is running with less power than usual and will also stall on the highway when it's raining.

When the car stalls, I can usually wait about 10-15 minutes and it will start again and will run enough to get me home.

Also, the car runs sluggish (less power than usual) at all times, rain or shine.  Acceleration is lacking and if I hit the gas on the highway to accelerate it tends to hesitate a little and slowly accelerates.

Any assistance you can provice is greatly appreciated!

is the car petrol or diesel? what size engine?

Answer
it is likely that you may need new ignition leads. i would replace these first and then re check it. it is common for these to break down over time, and they are alot cheaper than the ignition coil. both jobs are fairly straight forward and should be no real problem to someone who is handy with a screwdriver and spanner. just replace one lead at a time to prevent any miss-haps. thankyou for your rapid response. john dempsey
