HELLO AGAIN JOHN, WELL I HAVE NOW CHANGED THE WATER PUMP, AND MY HEATER IS WORKING AGAIN NORMALLY. THOUGH THIS ONLY LASTED A FEW HOURS BEFORE I HAD TO TOP UP THE WATER, WHICH I HAVE NOW HAD TO DO A COUPLE OF TIMES NOW.. I HAVE NOTICED THAT IF MY RADIATOR KICKS IN EARLY ENOUGH THEN THE PRESSURE IN THE SYSTEM IS OK. BUT THIS DOES'NT ALWAYS SEEM TO HAPPEN,IT KICKS IN BETWEEN A QUARTER AND HALF WAY ON THE TEMPREATURE GADGE. THE NEEDLE ON THE TEMP' GOES ONE QUARTER WAY UP AND THEN TO HALF WAY,DEPENDING HOW LONG I'VE BEEN DRIVING. BUT THE WATER IS STILL BEING FORCED OUT OF THE OVERFLOW BOTTLE.. THE ONLY THING I CAN THINK OF IS TAKING OUT THE THERMOSTATE COMPLETLY. BUT I DON'T REALY WANT TO HAVE TO DO THIS..THERE ARE ONLY A COUPLE OF SMALL BUBBLES COMING UP TO THE OVERFLOW BOTTLE WHEN I AM ADDING WATER.AND THE CAR IS RUNNING ON ALL 4 CYLINDERS AND IS RUNNING NICE.. I HAVE ALSO JUST CHANGED THE DIZZY CAP, ROTTER ARM AND I HAVE PUT ON NEW BOSCH HT LEADS.. WOULD A PRESSURE TEST TELL IF THE HEAD GASKET IS ON ITS WAY OUT ?? I APPARENTLY HAD IT PRESSURE TESTED A FEW WEEKS AGO AND WAS TOLD IT WAS ALL OK. BUT I MAY TRY ANOTHER GARRAGE TO SEE WHAT THEY SAY..AN ACTUAL VW GARAGE..  IF I TOOK OUT THE THERMOSTATE COMPLETLY, WOULD THIS DAMAGE THE ENGINE IN ANY WAY?? OVER ANY PERIOD ?? AND WOULD I STILL HAVE TO KEEP TOPPING UP THE WATER LEVEL PERIODICALLY.??

Answer
by removing the thermostat completely, it allows the engine to run alot cooler. this as far as my experiance spans has not caused any real problems before. rather than checking the compression pressure, it would be worth while having the cooling system pressure checked. a few psi down on a cylinder wouldn't be noticable, however after a while a 15 - 20 psi increase in the coolant system would be easily noticed. (if the cylinder is loosing pessure, it will accumulate in the cooling system until it  blows the water out through the cap). also i have known the expansion bottle caps to go faulty on a few occasions, as these only cost a few pounds to replace it may be worth trying that aswell.
