Volkswagen: I really dont know, test sequences, john dempsey

Question
I just replaced the neutralizer in the ignition not even a month ago. I did what you told me to do and got no response on the test light. After I replaced the starter it still did not start, unless I push start it. I let it sit overnight the next moring it started up with no problem, I shut it off and tried to start it again and it immediately start it again. Then I let it sit for like 4 hours and went to go start it again and it wouldnt start. I'm pissed I just put over $500 into it. I dont know what to do.-------------------------

I'm having a problem with my 97' Jetta, First off my car wouldn't start and it wasnt the battery so I put a new starter in it and it still wouldn't start. Then all of a sudden the next morning it started. then later on in the day it wouldn't start again. Does anyone know whats wrong with my car? Thank You

if you are sure the battery is fine, and have replaced the starter motor. then the next step is to check if the ignition switch is working correctly. for this you will need eiter a test lamp or a voltmeter ( working at 12v). you unplug the small connector from the starter (not the main battery wire) and place the positive probe or wire into it, attach the other probe or wire to the battery negative terminal. then you simply turn the igniton key to the start position and hold it. you should eiter get the light on or a reading of approximately 12v.  if this is the case, try turning the key a few times just to ensure it is not a one off fluke. if the switch appears to be ok, contact me again and i will check for other test sequences. if the switch is faulty, then it will require replacing. hope thios helps, john dempsey.

Answer
after doing what i said and getting no light, then i would replace the switch. if the switch has been replaced recently, it may be the ignition barrel (part key goes in) that is causing problems. it is rare, but has been known for the barrel to wear and inevitably break the switches.
