Volvo: 1990 volvo 740 wont shift out of first......., volvo 740, car idles

Hi Ray, My 1990 volvo 740 has been having a problem lately. It will only go about 20-25 mph as you step on gas it will rev higher and higher.  My son says if you rev it at about 3500 rpms for about 5 minutes or so it will kick down and go into second and than drive fine.  Also he says sometimes he shifts the gear selector between drive and fisrt to get it to kick down and go ito second and then it drives fine.  Also i pulled codes 2-3-2 and 1-1-3 but I don't think they are related issues.  Car idles fine and drives fine other than the stated above.  Thanks, Bill

You can check the trans fluid and the shift cable first. However it sounds like the trans is gone. Once the trans starts to operate that way about all you can do is replace or rebuild. The codes that you have are fuel trim codes and has to do with the engine not the trans.
