Volvo: Volvo S80 head scratcher, volvo s80, head scratcher

Question
God, if you can help me out with this I will owe you big time because I am pulling my hair out!  A lady recently had a new torque converter installed in this '02 S80 (I know, but brother, the '02 is almost identical to the '00) and thereafter the car became hard to start - it cranks an extended period.  During this period there is no spark, until, there is spark and it fires up.  Fuel system is fine, good pressure, just no spark.  This car uses the Bosh M system.  If you unplug the crank (speed, rpm, whatever various sources refer to it as) sensor (atop the trans at the back of the engine) it acts the same - no difference at all.  Crank sensor plugged in or unplugged still cranks extended period then starts up.  Car has NO CODES.  Crank sensor has 2.5 volt feed on plus side and when running and plugged in it does generate an AC current.  Cam sensor good, MAF good, so on and so on.  I have read specs claiming this sensor can generate as much as 50 volts AC at high rpms.  I have monitored it making the acceptable 3.5 at idle and at probably 3 or 4 grand (rpm) it is making about 10 volts.  Any ideas?  visual inspection has the flexplate with its "tone" ring looking okay - can this thing be bolted on incorrectly (flywheel/flexplate)?  AND if it was bolted on incorrectly would this be a likely reponse?  She says it all began right after someone had the tranny out - is it coincidence?  Man, I hope you can tell me something!  Thanks for your very valuable time and input!

Answer
James,
The flywheel can not be installed wrong there is a line up pin. Unless the pin was removed, broken, etc. I would be suspicious of the tone ring just a slight bend will throw it off. Also the bracket that holds the pick up I have seen broken ones. Since the problem occurred when the Trans was removed, I believe that you are looking in the right place and the Trans may have to be removed to verify what looks good and what maybe wrong.
