Volvo: 87 volvo wont stay running, gas leaks, robert test

Question
Ray,

I have an 87 240Dl that starts and runs for a few seconds and then dies.  It will not idle more than a few seconds.  When you press on the gas it dies immediately.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The problem occured originaly when the car was being driven and the acelerator was floored and the car died. It would run for a few seconds and then die.  Could it be the fuel pump?

Thanks,

Robert

Answer
Robert,
Test the fuel pressure should be about 42 psi. Make sure that the in tank pump works and is putting out about 4 psi. See if the car will run with the MAF unplugged. Remove and clean the throttle plate getting all the carbon deposits cleaned up. Some cars have bad engine wire harnesses that fray and short out. While testing the fuel pressure pull the vacuum line from the pressure regulator to see if gas leaks out. Is the fuel filter blecked, or the hose to the intake manifold cracked open, not tight?
