Volvo: 1994 850 non-turbo transmission, limp home, up arrow

Question
Hi,
My Volvo seems to be stuck in limp-home mode.  The up arrow is lit ( not flashing ) and there is no response or lights from the mode switch ( w-e-s ).  The error code reported is 1-2-4 which refers to the mode switch.  I disassembled and cleaned the switch with no effect.  I cannot clear the fault code.  I'm stuck.  Car drives in 3rd gear and can be shifted to 2nd.  Can you help?  I'm hoping that if I can clear the codes it might start working again.  Thanks, Ken

Answer
Ken,
The info that I have states the trans should be in the "E" mode. It also said the wires from the mode switch to the control unit and grounds, could be at fault. The vehicles that I have seen with trans faults where you can shift into gears maunally have needed a gear position sensor, a common fault with that trans. Could there be more codes stored than you have read?
