Volvo: 1990 Volvo 740gl emissions failure, hydro carbons, egr valve

Question
QUESTION: Okay,  I have a 740 gl without an EGR valve...my mechanic says that's what is causing my high NOx.  HELP!  I'm between 10 and 150 points away from passing.  Everything else passes clean - save NOx...
Moved back to GA from Cincy and it's killing me.

ANSWER: Travis,
So the problem is NOX, and your car is not equipted with EGR. Not ever car of that year was comng with EGR. So since that is the case will they not give you a waiver? If they will not can they provide you with a "fix" for the car? Like a shop to take it to have EGR installed.

QUESTION: The Clean Air Force in GA requires a $755 investment without a pass rating to allow for a 1 year waiver - then I guess I'd get to do it again next year if it doesn't pass!  I'm fairly sure, although my car runs like a dream, I couldn't SELL my car for $755! (301k miles!).
And as far as "fix its" are concerned I'm on my own.

Any thoughts on other ways to assist with NOX reduction in a Volvo w/o and EGR system?

Would a crap Catalytic converter cause just the NOX to fail without causing other things to fail as well?

Thanks,
Travis

Answer
Travis,
I never have had any problems to date with NOX in my area, so the only thing I know is the EGR. You need to sell your car to someone that lives in an area that no emissions are required. A cat will not have affect on the NOX. It cleans HC hydro carbons. Now I do not know if there is a cat that is out there that is designed to help with NOX. I would think the emission station would be the best place to ask for additional help.
