Volvo: volvo v70 d5 engine cuts out., volvo v70 d5, mass air flow meter

Question
Hello, i am having problems with my 2002 v70 d5 when driving steady (60mph ish) with a steady throtle it runs 100% then after approx 5/6 mile it dies and stalls but starts of the key with no problem, i had it put on a code reader at a volvo agent and no faults were stored, it also pinks under acceleration, it goes like a rocket and if driven hard with plenty of throtle movement it gives no problem, im a machanic by trade and have even tried the mass air flow meter with no luck, could there be a knock sensor fault? and or a tps problem? Just to add when the ngine dies the rev counter flickers so im thinking relays or something electrical, the ecu under the bonnet on the right side of the car does seem hot is that normal on the volvo.

   Thanks in advance  Ellery

Answer
Ellery,
All the vehicles that I have had and been able to fix have had some codes in the system. About the only thing that will not throw a code is the fuel pump. So it maybe getting weak and or stopping. You could try driving with a fuel gauge attached. If you feel more like the stall is from the ignition you might want to try a coil (if your car is older and has only one ignition coil). The control units do ot run real hot. The ping sounds like bad gas or timing however any miss or ping should set a code. You might want to see that the timing belt has not skipped a tooth.
