Volvo: Engine Tapping, volvo wagon, volvo dealership

Question
I had a new engine put into a 1999 volvo wagon 12/07.  Since the engine was put in I have taken it back to the mechanic for a loud tapping noise 10 times.  After the 7th return to the mechanic I took it to a volvo dealership mechanic and had an assessment written up which noted that the issue was the sump.  SInce then I have taken it back to the mechanic who installed the engine 3 times and it still taps.  The mechanic is saying he may have to get a new engine.  What expertise can you offer here.  I do not know engines and can only go by what I am being told.

Answer
Linda,
Seems like the dealer thinks the noise is due to the seals on the oil pick up tube dried out and there is air being sucked in and not enough oil. In order to have those seals replaced the oil pan must be pulled off. Was that repair done? If it was done maybe an inspection of debris in the oil pan lead to the possibility of another engine. Debris would be metal flacks, filings from internal wear. If the engine was a remanufactored one from Volvo there is warranty. If it was new to you (used) it might have came with dried out seals, and not enough oil was pumped through the engine and now it is worn out. A better explaination from your shop as to why it needs another engine might be a good idea. Ask why it needs a another engine, and is the engine you have in your car now under some warranty? Will any replacement have a warranty?
