Volvo: 1995 960 drivers power seat repair, mike harness, seat work

Question
Dear Ray,

My driver's power seat forward/backward motor was operating on the door side, but stuck on the console side.  By tweaking the switches, I managed to inch it forward to it's maximum position, but now I can't get it to go back at all.  All of the other motors on the seat work perfectly, but it is stuck in the forward position.  Being 6'2' and 250, I can barely get into the seat and couldn't safely drive it from this positin.  I have moderate mechanical skills.  How can I fix this problem?  Thanks very much.  -Mike Harness

Answer
Mike,
Since you know what side is not working pull the seat out flip it over and check the cable to that side. I find that as the cable winds it also becomes shorter after time. I pull the cable out of the sheath and then shorten the sheath to allow the cable to fit all the way into the motor and gear set. I cut the sheath behind the collar drive out the piece that remains in the collar and then reattach the collar. That will shorten the sheath about 10mm, usually enough to make it work again.
