Volvo: V40, volvo v40, test drive

Question
Hi I am looking at buying a Volvo V40 1998 with 150000 KM on the clock. I
had a 240 for years but it finally had to go. What is your opinion on the V40,
are they known to be reliable and  what are some common issues. Would you
recommend buying one?

Thanks
Brent

Answer
Brent,
The early S/V 40's have had there problems. I have a couple of clients that are selling their 1999 2000 because of many problems. Take the car you like to a shop that knows the Volvo's and have them inspect it. Get a list of good things and bad. Use that as a guide to see if the car has been maintained or needs maintenance. Test drive the car to see if you like the way it feels. I always thought it had a harsh ride, felt a bit "tinny". The later models 02 and up have had the little problems worked out and may be a better choice.
