Volvo: 1999 Volvo - Angle gear, volvo wagon, xc70

I have a 1999 XC70 Volvo wagon with l60,000 km. My car seized up as my
pinon gear was binding and my angle gear needs replacing.  The dealership
said this part is $3200 and there is no way we can know if the transmission is
wrecked until this part is replaced. If the transmission needs repair I am
looking at almost $8000 total  in repairs. Have there been any dealer recalls
in these areas?  What should I do?

I know of no recalls, but there has been more than a few problems with the angle gear. I get calls almost daily about these. Used one are also very hard to find. If you like the car spend the money, but with the mileage you might be better off looking for another car.
