Volvo: 2005 S40 Volvo, s40 volvo, message board thanks

Question
This past weekend I went to start my car and the dahboard message board indicated a key error- try again. The car would not start and what appeared to be no sign of life. I let it sit and tried again today (after attempting again, locking and unlocking the door and then jumping it with battery cables) it started.  The car did not start right away even with the cables attached.  Messed with the key a few times more and then it started.  What could that mean?

What does that mean - key error?  I did replace the remote battery - but when this needed it before there was a message on the message board.  thanks

Answer
Sue,
Key error is the chip in the key is not reconized by the vehicle. There is a ring around the ignition lock that reads the key and that antenna has failed in the past. Get to the dealer and have them test the system and tell you if the system is a failure due the antenna ring.
