Volvo: Lambda sign (check engine), cold weather conditions, volvo 850

Question
I left for vacation for a week, my volvo 850 (1998) at first started no problem (it was left on my driveway in toronto in cold weather conditions), took it to the gas station to pump the tires and turned off the engine. Now when i tried to turn the engine on again it wouldn't turn on.. after many tries it finally turned on but the car seemed to be jerking (shaking) while idleing and the lambda sign appeared. Tried to drive and the engine turned off again. Started the engine again after a few tries, revd it for a while and started driving. After driving for a while the jerking stoped altogether and the car starts normally; however, the lambda sign is still on. What could be the cause of this? and what causes my car to jerk like that?

Answer
Arayan,
There has to be some fault codes posted, say for misfire and that maybe the only reason the light is on. You need a shop that has a scan tool and can read the faults then clear them to see if any come back. You stated Lambda light here in the States we do not have that light, only a check engine light. I think that they mean the same thing. Your problem coould have been some misfiring spark plugs and that set some codes.
