Volvo: 1995 850 GLT .....what did I get myself into?!, sway bars, sway bar

Question
I purchased a 1995 850 with 112k miles in August for $3,500.  I've had to put $3,000 in repairs in the first 1,000 miles...timing belt plus a few extras, a/c compressor & receiver, a new rack (rack locked up)and tie rods, plus now I've had to replace the front sway bars and lower conrol arms (bad bushings).  It's been an expensive 2 months and I'm starting to question the reliability of this model.  I thought one could put 200k-300k miles on a Volvo.  Granted, I don't know the repair history and the previous owner let the car sit for 8 months (Dec-Aug) prior to my purchase.  I guess my question would be...would you consider these to be "normal" repairs to expect at this point (112k)? Could the rack replacement and sway bar replacements be indicative of a bigger problem?  I could use some reassuring words or an expert opinion...did I get in over my head when I bought this car?

Answer
Michelle,
It is not unusual to put that money in the 850's. They experience many problems during their life time. At 112K things might just have worn out, lack/overlooking of proper maintance, rough use. Yes if the car was properly maintained it will last but, not without repairs. As with any front drive car costs to repair are higher and parts more expensive. I always advise taking a car to a shop that works on Volvo's for a used car inspection before purchase, as that will allow some leverage to negotiate final price.
