Volvo: 164E airconditioner, power steering pump, york compressor

Question
I own a 1973 164E that I bought new. It has a York compressor. This thing periodically breaks the power steering pump bracket because they share the same fan belt. At certain speeds you can feel the whole car vibrate. I have been told that this air conditioner was a factory add-on and was poorly designed from the beginning. Do you have any suggestions as to what I can do to make this bracket stronger or to stop the vibration.

Answer
Bruce,
If you have a "good" machine shop you can remove the bracket and have them copy it using a stronger steel, and reinforce the areas that crack.
The older cars did not come with A/C from the factory, so all A/C's had to be installed at the dealer with a kit that Volvo supplied. The system was as good as the technology was at the time.
