Volvo: Volvo overdrive light on and flashing W E on consol, volvo 960, mode switch

I just got this Volvo 960 and it is great but today the overdrive arrow is flashing
on my dash and these unknown button near the shifter marked W , S and E are
flashing. the car is a little more sluggish starting from stop now. what has gone
wrong if anything?

When that arrow and the lights in the mode switch are flashing that will mean there is a fault code in the system that will need attention. Have the codes read and see what and where they lead. Most times I find a bad gear position sensor. Gear poaition sensor installed about $350.00.
