Volvo: 2001 S40 - Erratic Idle;high Idle Rpm(1500);stalling, fuel pressure regulator, mass sensor

Question
QUESTION: Hi,

I read several similar posting but it seems my problem is a combination and I already took care of some of the recommended fixes.

The symptoms:
-P and N idle is high - 1200-1500 rpm. If the car is cold, when started the idle is 1000 and shortly after increases.
-Switching to D, R idle drops at 1000.
-Occasionally, when I brake to halt, the engine stalls ( the rpm goes very low and engine dies)
- Recently, in addition to the above I noticed that if I take my foot of the gas pedal, the car does not reduce rpm or speed but keeps going with the same speed and rpm.

There are no error codes( so I assume it is not the MAF ? -could this be the case?). I had the air filter changed, the spark plugs changed and the air and fuel injection carbon cleaned but this did not help or at least - no obvious result. My next step will be changing the idle control valve and after that the fuel pressure regulator.

Can you offer me a different advice or path of action as I do not want to spend money on parts I do not need to change?

Thanks,

Viktor

ANSWER: Viktor,
There have been several problems with the ETS electronic throttle system and sometimes a new download of programming changes that fault. The dealer can check this and offer their solution, and preform the download if you need it. Call them with the VIN and see what they tell you.

QUESTION: Thanks,
Can you give me any advice on troubleshooting the Idle Control valve and the fuel pressure regulator so that I can prove fault or exclude them from list?
Meaning, is there any typical behaviour I should see if I disconnect and reconnect them when they are fine and when they are faulty.
Same thing for the Air Mass Sensor. Can I troubleshoot it without changing it ?
Thanks

Answer
Viktor,
Line Pressure At Injectors    43.5 +/- 1.5 psi
Note: Above inlet manifold pressure
Pump Pressure    At 12.5 Volts Max    116.0 psi
At 12.5 Volts Min    70.0 psi
Line Pressure Regulator (On Fuel Pump)    58.0 - 72.5 psi

These are measurements that will require a test gauge.

The idle speed motor should set a code if it is faulty. It can also be monitored using the VIDA scan tool. If you would disconnect it the idle should remain at the point where it was at, but you would post a fault code. Diagnosis on these cars is done using the scan tool in the montior mode. There are not any specs listed to seperatly test these pieces. When doing  a pin out test a "break out box" is plugged into the control unit plug to make pin tests.
MAF can also be montiored using the VIDA. Again unplugging it will set a fault code.
