Volvo: Engine Dies when AC is On, volvo 850 wagon, volvo 850

I have a 1995 Volvo 850 wagon turbo.  I can have the AC on if I am in park.  But, if I put the car in gear or turn the ac on while I am driving, the engine will die.  I can run the fan while in gear but not the ac.  Any ideas?

The compressor maybe locking up and causing the engine to die. The idle is controlled by the fuel control unit that could go bad, but that has not been the fault with any that I know of. The throttle housing maybe dirty and need cleaning. They get carboned up and the air flow becomes restricted.
