Volvo: 92 940GL just quits while driving, fuel pump relay, volvo repair

Question
Hi Ray, I have a 92 940GL non-turbo and sometime it will just quit while driving. At first I assumed it was my park switch but the car turns over but just won't fire. I have reserved a day to take it to a Volvo repair shop but that won't be for a few days. The guy at the shop told me it could be the fuel pump relay located behind the fuse box/ash tray. He told me to look for burnt connection around the base. I am going to look into this but I was wondering if you had any troubleshooting tricks for checking out the relay. Is there an audible click of the relay when the key is turned on? Or if you have any ideas why this car keeps randomly stopping. Thanks for the help.

Answer
Milon,
Yes there is a click when the relay is engerized, but that does not mean that the relay will stay engerized, and it is a known problem area. Rule of thumb is to replace the relay if in doubt. It is about $50.00. You really have to test the car when it stops to see if the fuel pump is in fact running, that you have power to the pump and or the relay. So there is not a simple cover all test that will tell what part is failing. You might as well have any codes read in the system as that might indicate a possible fault that will also need attention.
I would replace the relay and check for fault codes, then address the fault code if there are any.
