Volvo: Steering problems, volvo s80, steering racks

I own a 1999 Volvo S80 2.9L. It has been leaking power steering fluid (It is dripping from the underbody by the drivers side wheel). I called a dealership and they said I would need to replace the steering rack, $1500 is this truly what needs to be done? If so, I've found replacement steering racks online for about $400, would it be advisable to do this replacement myself? Thanks for your time.

Model year 99 was a bad year for the S80. I had one once that I needed the P/S rack and a mounting kit that was expensive. I believe that was due to a updated rack, so the replacement one is no longer a direct fit. If you feel lucky enough order that aftermarket rack. Let me know how that works out.
