Volvo: 1981 Volvo Electrical and Warning Lamps, mechanic friend, volvo 240

Question
I have a 1981 Volvo 240 manual sedan.  I love my car but recently I started having a number of rather strange electrical problems.  My local repair shop has been helpful but is getting tired of seeing me.  I can fix some things but electrical is my weakest area.  Here are the problems in the order of appearance:

The seatbelt buzzer started going off sporadically and did this for a week or so.  At first it seemed somewhat random but as time passed it settled into a rhythm where it would go off when the brake pedal was depressed.  A mechanic friend of mine and I looked under the steering column and separated some wires so that they wouldn't rub together and the problem was solved.

Within a few days, all of the warning annunciators began to flicker when I'd go around a turn.  They would all come on and go off together kinda like the test phase when the car is started but more of a flicker.  Over time the lights began to flash when the car was accelerating and decelerating and sometimes would continue to flash in a rhythm after the car was stopped.  I wondered if there was some wire that was hanging down making contact with another wire when it would swing back and forth.  I still haven't solved this problem.

Just today I realized that my brake lights do not work.  Could this be associated with the warning light problem mentioned above?  I curious if I have a bad relay or another easy electrical fix.  Thanks for any help you can offer!

Answer
John,
When the fuse for the brake lights is out the buzzer will sound while applying the brakes. Most times when the warning lights flicker that indicate a charging system fault. So test the charging system and get a new shop that works on Volvos, they know what to look for on the cars.
