Volvo: 2000 Volvo S70, nissan xterra, 2000 volvo s70

Question
We own a 2000 Volvo S70 with 85000 miles.  We've had the car to the dealer numerous times for Air Condition issues.  It seems they just charge it.  What's happening is the AC gets cold initially but lasts only 15 minutes and then the air gets hot and smells funny.  Once it's been off for a while it works again when turned back on. Any ideas?

Another Question:  We also own a 2000 Nissan Xterra with 106,000 miles on it.  We are going to trade one of these vehicles in for a new one.  We're having trouble deciding.  I know Nissan's last, what is the volvo's track record?  And which one is more likely to cause us expensive problems in the future?  Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
Tom

Answer
Tom,
For the A/C there have been many problems with the compressor itself. The clutch gets some wear on it and then the clutch gap is too great. When that happens the clutch can not always stay engaged then the air only blows warm. Further testing will have to be done.
The Volvo has some problems in that year, maybe it is time to get rid of it.
